FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS IN TUSCANY: To the West its 320 kilometres of coastline are met by the Ligurian Sea in the Central-Northern stretch between Marina di Carrara and the Gulf of Baratti, and by the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Southern stretch between Piombino and the mouth of Chiarone the torrent marking its border with Lazio. Tuscany also administrates the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, Gorgona in the Ligurian Sea, Capraia between the Ligurian Sea and the Channel of Corsica, Elba Island between the Ligurian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Channel of Piombino and the islands of Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri in the Tyrrhenian Sea." The Tuscan territory is mostly hilly (66.5%); it includes some plains (about 8.4% of the region) and some important mountain ranges (25.1% of the region). Both to the North and to the East, Tuscany is surrounded by the Apennines, but the region itself is mostly hilly. The other important rises of the region are the Chianti Hills, which embellish the countryside between Siena and Florence; the Metallifere Hills, which separate the Pisa’s Southern hinterland from the Maremma; the Pisan Mountains between Pisa and Lucca; the Monte Amiata, an ancient volcano, now extinct, which rises up between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto; and the Pratomagno, which is almost completely surrounded by the river Arno and divides the Apennine part of the Aretino, the Casentino, from the Valdarno Superiore Fiorentino and Aretino. The main river is the Arno. The Tuscan region is divided into ten provinces: the provinces of Florence, Arezzo, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, Massa Carrara, Grosseto, and Siena. Each one has a strong character, rich in its own particular culture and landscape. The capital cities of each province are the biggest cities. The population of these cities is cited below in descending order according to their number of inhabitants: Florence 352,000; Prato 185,603; Livorno 161,300; Pisa – 90,450; Arezzo – 92,300; Pistoia – 85,900; Lucca – 85,500; Grosseto – 72,600; Massa – 70,100; Siena – 54,400. This region is well-known throughout the world thanks to its many works of art and thanks to Chianti, which is one of its wines, but also one of the most famous territories of Italy. Today, Tuscan gastronomy receives great appreciation for its production of high-quality olive oil and wines, such as the Brunello di Montalcino, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the Chianti DOC, the Chianti Classico DOCG, the Carmignano DOCG, the Morellino di Scansano, the Montecucco, the Monteregio di Massa Marittima, the Ansonica dell'Argentario, the reds of Elba, and the exceptional reds produced along Livorno’s coastline which are the Bolgheri Sassicaia, the Bolgheri DOC and the Ornellaia.
